Priests as Vampires…

Posted on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 at 6:21 am in Bloodcast News Network.

You know about the sparkly vegetarian vampires in “Twilight,” you know about synthetic blood drinking ones in “True Blood,” you probably even know about the dreadful, soul-sucking ones in Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming vampire novel “The Strain.”

But there’s a new fictional vampire about to join the ever-swelling world of vampire fiction and this one might just be your spiritual leader too.

The South Korean film director Park Chan-Wook, best known for his award-winning film “Oldboy,” is releasing a movie at Cannes in May called “Thirst.” And in it, a Catholic priest becomes a vampire during a medical experiment.

In an interview with Reuters, Park said “I thought I could add some changes to this old genre by approaching the subject — vampire-ism, so to speak — without the usual mystery or romanticism but from a realistic perspective where being a vampire is sort of a disease.”

What do you think, friends of BCNN? Should we root for “Thirst” to win big at Cannes?

“Have you not been taught to fear and dread vampires?”

Posted on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 at 9:00 am in Bloodcast News Network.

I swear I didn’t write this editorial in the Ohio State University newspaper! I swear, I swear, I swear. I mean, I know it sounds like me. It sounds exactly like something I’d write – this rant about how vampires are really bad, not good as recent fiction tries to convince us.

Allow me to quote the story: “Have you not been taught to fear and dread vampires? I mean, they do suck your blood.”

My point exactly. That is precisely what we try to convey every day here at the Bloodcast News Network. So thank you Gerrick Kennedy and can you please come join our news staff at the BCNN as we seek to uncover the truth.

Talk about warm-blooded

As if you needed any more proof that Team Jacob is the right one to be on, then cast your eyes upon this photo of the wolf pack in the “New Moon,” the second film based on the “Twilight” series. Because somebody spent some time in the gym and it wasn’t the vamps. The quartet of young men (boy-men, really) who turn into wolves at will has been cast – with actor Taylor Lautner playing Jacob, the main wolf-boy – and in our estimation at the Bloodcast News Network, they look a bit better than the bloodsuckers do with their shirts off. Maybe that’s because they can take their shirts off in the sun. Rather than sparkling, they singe! That’s what animal magnetism is all about, as USA Today would say.

Honest Abe a Vampire Slayer?

Posted on Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 8:26 am in Bloodcast News Network.

Might the country’s most revered president have been a vampire hunter? The mere thought gives me the goosebumps, and in a good way. Because not only did Abraham Lincoln prevent our country from being torn in two, he also could have been a 19th century Buffy!

OK, so I’m getting ahead of myself. It’s not like historians are saying he slayed the undead. Still, Grand Central Publishing reportedly signed author Seth-Grahame Smith (he of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” fame) to a two-book deal that includes “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” According to the New York Times, the book imagines the former president as a slayer of the undead.

Admit it. If any president stalked bloodsuckers, it totally would have been Lincoln.

Once a Wolf, Now a Vampire: Michael Sheen Cast as Volturi

Posted on Friday, April 24th, 2009 at 8:17 am in Bloodcast News Network.

First we wanted to know if Taylor Lautner was big enough to be a wolf. Now, an actor best known for playing a wolf is going to play the wolf’s mortal enemy — a bloodsucker. “Underworld’s” Michael Sheen has been cast as one of the Volturi Vampires in Twilight’s sequel “New Moon,” according to the LA Times.

In New Moon, he’ll play Aro, the Volturi leader who can read your mind, including any thought you ever had in your whole life, just by touching you with his hand.

Of course he also played Tony Blair in “The Queen” too.

Michael Sheen — wolf, vampire or world leader? Which role suits him best?

Just because they’re hot doesn’t mean they’re good!

Posted on Friday, April 17th, 2009 at 9:30 am in Bloodcast News Network.

What’s with the “bite first, ask questions later” mentality? Because sometimes I think everyone is just kind of offering up their necks without thinking twice. It’s like people are all swoony and moony and thinking vampires are just so hot and anything hot has to be good, so they want to get all lusty and lovey with a MEMBER OF THE UNDEAD!

People! Stop, think, listen…

I am bringing this up because pop culture’s fascination with vampires has reached a fevered pitch. Now I’m hearing that the CW is premiering a new television series “Vampire Diaries” this fall. It’s based on a bestselling series of novels of the same name and centers on a teenage girl – I know, this is going to be a big shock – who’s in love with a vampire. Actually, make that two vampires – two brothers – one is evil and one is good.

“Vampire Diaries” comes on the heels of “Twilight” and “True Blood” and this trio of visual vampiric depictions is causing me some serious concern. Because clearly there is a shift occurring in the public’s perception of vampires and everyone seems to think there are now good vampires and there’s nothing to worry about! I have to say the idea that there might be good ones has always seemed just a tad bit dangerous to us here at the BCNN.

Am I the only one sounding an alarm? Did I go to sleep for 100 years and wake up with the vampire infestation solved and all bloodsuckers turned into harmless little supernatural creatures? What do you think?

Let the truth be told: cats are half-vampires

Posted on Friday, April 10th, 2009 at 5:51 pm in Bloodcast News Network.

If you want to be up to speed on all things undead – and I know you do – you need to know what’s being disseminated out there in pop culture. I mean, that’s only my mission here at the Bloodcast News Network – to dispel the rumors and report the truth about the world we live in and the vampires that populate it too.

So let’s talk about the Swedish vampire flick “Let the Right One in.” (You’ve seen it, right? Don’t tell me you’re just “Twilight” fans. You know the vampire oeuvre goes so much deeper than Ms. Meyer’s work, all the way back to Mr. Stoker.) So, there’s one particular aspect of the indie flick that we need to discuss. Recent reviews point out that the movie adds a new component to vampire lore – the idea that cats don’t like vampire. This is SO not true! I have seen many cats that are half-vampires. In fact, my cat is half-vampire. You might be wondering why I keep such a pet. Well, here is a little-known fact about cat half-vampires. They do a much better job than garlic cloves or holy water at warding vampires away. I’ve never been visited by a vampire in my house and I know it’s because of my cat Jonathan Harker.

Vampires at High School?

Posted on Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 at 12:00 pm in Bloodcast News Network.

Hello Confessions fans!

I’m Chris, a staffer at Bloodcast News Network, the number one source for vampire news, information and insight. You probably don’t know me because I’m one of those behind-the-scenes people (they don’t let me
appear on camera), but I’m so excited to be a part of the world’s biggest Confessions fan site. I’ve been following Luci’s and Corbin’s blog for some time, sending them tidbits and tips that come my way. So
they invited me to be a part of their world with regular blog posts. That means I can share some of the developing stories I come across as part of my daily job sifting through the endless thicket of vampire
news.

For starters, “Twilight” might have started as an innocent forbidden love story, but now it’s leading to some real trouble. Last week at one of the country’s most prestigious prep schools, Boston Latin, students starting emailing local news outlets claiming there were vampires at the school, according a Huffington Post story. Apparently, a student was bitten and this set off the undead alarms. Police stopped by the school and calmed things down, the story said. The headmaster even sent a note to parents reassuring them the tony
high school doesn’t admit vampires.

But do you want to know my insider’s take as a frontline member of the only news organization dedicated to exposing vampires? Well, I’ll tell you. A bite is very concerning. Look, teenagers don’t bite. Toddlers
and puppies do. Why would a teenager just randomly have a bite? Plus, teenagers are known are known for pulling all-nighters without any type of caffeinated assistance. Why? They don’t need sleep anyway. You know what I’m talking about.

Chris
