Vampires in Israel

Posted on May 29, 2009 at 6:49 am in

It just never ends, people.

Apparently, we as pop culture consumers have an insatiable thirst for vampires. (Who else has an insatiable thirst too, my little pretties?)

Word is that Israeli cable provider HOT is launching its own vampire TV show. It’s called “Split” and it’s about a 15-year-old girl who’s half-vampire, half-human. One of her classmates reveals her true identity and, you know, complications ensue.

I’m smacking my palm against my forehead now, because clearly there is no escape from vampires. From Twilight to True Blood to Vampire Diaries to The Strain to another ancient conflict between humans and the once-humans. The show debuts May 28 and the poster for it looks NOTHING like Twilight. I mean, not an ounce of similarity there.

How would you fit Edward/RPattz into New Moon movie?

Posted on May 28, 2009 at 6:46 am in

By now you’ve probably heard the news that should surprise, like, no one. (Anyone remember in “Aladdin” when the evil parrot says sarcastically “I’m going to die of not surprise?” Well, that’s how I feel.)

Anyway, so the big news…drum roll…is Summit Entertainment is going to make the fourth movie in the Twilight saga. Yes, this is a BIG SHOCK. Who would have thought the studio that’s raking in the bucks from the hit film, the studio that is shooting the second and third installments this year, would go all the way and also shoot – egads – the final flick?

Enough about that. Let’s talk about New Moon. The filmmakers and Rob Pattinson himself are making a big deal about how the largely-absent-from-the-second-book Edward will actually play a larger role in the movie version.

Let’s speculate – how do you think the film will address his absence? How will the film incorporate the star into the storyline when he’s gone for most of the book?

Twilight DVD Rocks the Sales

Posted on May 27, 2009 at 3:45 pm in

Looks like the little vampire movie that could is on pace to be the biggest selling DVD of the year. Of course, that’s according to a Telegraph report citing a shopping comparison firm that says “existing sales of books, DVDs and music from the series, combined with a huge amount of searches for the Twilight DVD in the past few weeks” are the factors pushing the lion-falls-in-love-with-the-lamb romance (oh, wait, it was an action flick too, right, thanks to the last scene) over the top.

What I find most interesting though from the story is learning what last year’s big DVD hit was, according to Amazon sales. Wanna guess?

OK, I’ll tell you.

“Mamma Mia.”

So the crown passes from a singing, dancing Meryl Streep to a moody, brooding girl and her dead beau.

Vampire Remakes a Go for Film and TV: Do They Scare You?

Posted on May 26, 2009 at 1:25 pm in

I still have nightmares from “Fright Night.” And I first saw it ten years ago on DVD. But yep, that movie freaks me out late at night. Of course, now I see it’s being billed as a “horror-comedy.” Oh ha ha. Make me feel real good about my nightmares of vampires swooping into a haunted house next door to me. Yeah, it’s a laugh a minute, isn’t it?

So now I hear that Dreamworks is remaking the 1985 “chuckler” to tap into our collective thirst for vampires. Is “Fright Night” funny to you? How would you remake the “laugher” flick to stop giving me nightmares?

Speaking of remakes, looks like it’s all official now that the CW is going to be carrying a TV version of the 1990s book series “Vampire Diaries.” The show centers on a teenage girl in love with not one, but two vampires. But one’s good and one’s bad. How’s a girl to choose???

New Moon Poster is Out!!

Posted on May 22, 2009 at 6:13 am in

So everyone, what do we think of the New Moon poster?

I, for one, think it’s fantastic. I like that the color is different from Twilight’s poster. The New Moon poster has more earth tones, which fits with the rise of the werewolves in the storyline. Plus, I’m all into seeing Jacob smack dab between Edward and Bella.

‘Course, it’s no secret I’m on Team Jacob.

But what do you think?

A Whodunit: The Case of the New Moon Script

Posted on May 21, 2009 at 6:30 am in

Memo to Anna Kendrick (aka Jessica) and Rob Pattinson:

You know, Anna and Rob, those scripts Summit gives you are kind of like gold. Or diamonds. Or lots and lots and lots of money. Meaning you want to keep them under lock and freaking key.

That means you don’t watch to ditch the shooting script for “New Moon” in a St. Louis garbage can. OK, fine, their fingerprints on the script. But the “New Moon” script was found by a beauty salon owner along with one for the Summit film “Memoirs,” which Rob may be starring in. Of course, they were found outside a St. Louis hotel where the cast for “Up in the Air” is staying and that cast includes Anna Kendrick who plays Jessica in the “Twilight” saga.

The beauty salon owner returned them the studio and got tickets for the premieres of both.

Who do you think did it?

Are you teaching vampire lore at your job fair?

Posted on May 20, 2009 at 6:25 am in

Maybe you should. The good folks in Norwich, Conn. are at the NFA World Fair, according to the NorwichBulletin.com.

During the “Forensics 101” class about the job possibilities in the forensic arts, local experts taught students how to solve forensic problems and also shared tales of early Connecticut settlers and “even of vampire myths in the state,” the story said.

What sort of vampire myths do the history keepers of this fine New England state hold dear? Connecticut, like much of New England, suffered from a rash of tuberculosis in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Belief in vampires was particularly strong in Eastern Connecticut then where many families exhumed their dead loved ones and removed their hearts, believing they might be vampires.

Ah, but I have digressed from the early point in this post. Perhaps more and more job fairs around the country should include discussions of vampire myths. After all, what better way to remain constantly vigilant than to pass our knowledge of vampires to the next generation, especially as they begin their very first jobs?

It’s better than on-the-job training.

Priests as Vampires…

Posted on May 19, 2009 at 6:21 am in

You know about the sparkly vegetarian vampires in “Twilight,” you know about synthetic blood drinking ones in “True Blood,” you probably even know about the dreadful, soul-sucking ones in Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming vampire novel “The Strain.”

But there’s a new fictional vampire about to join the ever-swelling world of vampire fiction and this one might just be your spiritual leader too.

The South Korean film director Park Chan-Wook, best known for his award-winning film “Oldboy,” is releasing a movie at Cannes in May called “Thirst.” And in it, a Catholic priest becomes a vampire during a medical experiment.

In an interview with Reuters, Park said “I thought I could add some changes to this old genre by approaching the subject — vampire-ism, so to speak — without the usual mystery or romanticism but from a realistic perspective where being a vampire is sort of a disease.”

What do you think, friends of BCNN? Should we root for “Thirst” to win big at Cannes?

Which celebrities would most likely be vampires?

Posted on May 18, 2009 at 6:16 am in

In a world where vampires definitely abound not just on the screen, but also in real life, it’s only smart to speculate!

FearNet compiled a list of celebrities most likely to be vampires:

  • Paris Hilton: The night owl does have porcelain skin
  • Adam Lambert: Fearnet notes his flawless eyeliner as perhaps a tip off
  • Angelina Jolie: She is always on a strange diet and might even be creating an army of vampires, the story speculates
  • Zachary Quinto: Aren’t Vulcans kind of like vampires?
  • Megan Fox: She hasn’t been spotted in sunlight in months
  • Now, what are other celebs might be vampires and why? You weigh in!

Is the Boy You’re Dating a Vampire?

Posted on May 14, 2009 at 6:00 am in

    Well, wonder no more…

If you’re going to keep getting all googly-owns over the pale, beautiful night owl boys, then you at least need to have this dating manual handy.

The book publisher Scholastic is releasing its “The Vampire is Just Not That Into You” by Vlad Mezrich (har, har) in the fall and it’s being billed as a dating guide for the undead.

It’s going to have quizzes and checklists and dating dos and don’ts.

Not that I advocate dating a vampire, but if you’re going to, at least be prepared.
