Luci’s take on bat vs. butterfly
I thought about this too, but I think it makes perfect sense. The bat is something that most people fear just because of the social connotations of the creature. Perhaps, having Noah change into something harmless and beautiful shows the inner beauty that is now being challenged by this new beast he has become.
I think it was smart to keep him something small, with the ability to fly. The butterfly was such a good unique choice.

The Bat and the Butterfly
I was re-reading the chapter where Noah first shape shifts, and I stopped to think about the significance of Siona choosing Noah to shape shift into a butterfly. Why a butterfly? She had almost any animal to choose from (well, other an a bat), but she chose that one. I have a theory about it, but I’m curious what you think about it.
ETA: This is my theory… if you think about it, it’s very good, survival-wise, to turn into some animal that 1) people don’t kill and 2) people don’t keep in zoos or as pets. Butterflies are not intrusive, and people generally leave them alone.
